6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
Dinner is $20 per person, payable at the door.
We are excited to welcome author Elaine Pagels, best-selling author and leading scholar in the field of early Christian belief. The evening starts at 6:00 p.m. following by Ms. Pagels’s presentation at 6:45 p.m. You might wish to purchase her most recent book, Why Religion? a raw and deeply personal exploration of faith. (We will also have some copies available that night to purchase).
With the tragic deaths of her young son and husband, Pagels faced unimaginable loss. She draws on the perspectives of neurologists, anthropologists, and historians in a provocative look at the role religion plays in suffering.
“Pagels argues that the Gospel of John was written as a rebuttal to the viewpoints put forth in the non-canonical Gospel of Thomas. She bases her conclusion on the theory that, in the Gospel of John, the apostle Thomas is portrayed as a disciple of little faith who cannot believe without seeing and, that the Gospel of John places an emphasis on Divine Jesus Christ as the center of belief, which Pagels views as a hallmark of early orthodoxy. Beyond Belief also includes Pagels' personal exploration of meaning during a time of loss and tragedy.”
